In honor of Black History Month, the School of Business, in partnership with African Student Programs (ASP), proudly hosted “Black Brilliance in Business” on the evening of February 26, 2025. This annual observance provided the campus with an opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the legacy and ongoing contributions of the Black community within higher education, business, and society as a whole.
The event served as a vibrant platform for connecting current students, alumni, faculty, and professionals, fostering a strong sense of belonging and collaboration. Attendees were able to engage in thoughtful conversations, share personal experiences, and expand their professional networks. For students, especially those preparing to transition into the workforce, this event was an invaluable space to learn from alumni and professionals who have walked similar paths and could provide mentorship, encouragement, and guidance.
In addition to the networking opportunities, the program highlighted the graduate degrees offered through the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management. Representatives from the MBA, Professional MBA, Master of Finance, and Master of Professional Accountancy programs were available to answer questions, explain admissions requirements, and describe how these degrees open doors to leadership opportunities in a wide variety of industries. This direct access to program staff helped demystify the application process and encouraged attendees to further consider advancing their education through the School of Business.
The partnership with African Student Programs (ASP) was instrumental in shaping the tone and inclusivity of the evening. ASP’s involvement ensured that the event aligned authentically with the broader celebration of Black History Month on campus. By combining resources and perspectives, ASP and the School of Business were able to create an atmosphere that was both welcoming and affirming, emphasizing the importance of representation and cultural heritage in academic and professional spaces. The collaboration also underscored the value of cross-departmental partnerships at UC Riverside, demonstrating how shared commitments can amplify impact.
One of the most powerful aspects of the evening was the emphasis on storytelling. Alumni and professionals were encouraged to share their personal journeys — detailing the challenges they faced, the successes they achieved, and the lessons they learned along the way. These narratives provided inspiration for students, many of whom could see reflections of themselves in the speakers’ experiences. By hearing about perseverance, resilience, and innovation, students gained not only motivation but also practical insights into navigating their own careers.
“Black Brilliance in Business” was more than just a one-time celebration; it was a living testament to the strength of community and the pursuit of excellence. It highlighted the ways in which cultural heritage and academic achievement intersect, reminding all participants of the value of lifting each other up and creating space for future generations to thrive. The evening closed with a shared sense of purpose — a recognition that conversations about diversity, equity, and representation are not confined to one month, but are essential year-round.
The School of Business looks forward to continuing these vital discussions, strengthening partnerships with African Student Programs, and supporting the ongoing success of students and alumni. By celebrating Black brilliance in all its forms, the school reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity, excellence, and the belief that business education should reflect the richness of the communities it serves.
